    Planes in four space and four associated CM points

    To any two-dimensional rational plane in four-dimensional space one can naturally attach a point in the Grassmannian Gr(2,4) and four lattices of rank two. Here, the first two lattices originate from the plane and its orthogonal complement and the second two essentially arise from the accidental local isomorphism between SO(4) and SO(3)xSO(3). As an application of a recent result of Einsiedler and Lindenstrauss on algebraicity of joinings we prove simultaneous equidistribution of all of these objects under two splitting conditions

    Effectiveness of an additional individualized multi-component complementary medicine treatment on health-related quality of life in breast cancer patients: a pragmatic randomized trial

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an additional, individualized, multi-component complementary medicine treatment offered to breast cancer patients at the Merano Hospital (South Tyrol) on health-related quality of life compared to patients receiving usual care only. A randomized pragmatic trial with two parallel arms was performed. Women with confirmed diagnoses of breast cancer were randomized (stratified by usual care treatment) to receive individualized complementary medicine (CM group) or usual care alone (usual care group). Both groups were allowed to use conventional treatment for breast cancer. Primary endpoint was the breast cancer-related quality of life FACT-B score at 6 months. For statistical analysis, we used analysis of covariance (with factors treatment, stratum, and baseline FACT-B score) and imputed missing FACT-B scores at 6 months with regression-based multiple imputation. A total of 275 patients were randomized between April 2011 and March 2012 to the CM group (n = 136, 56.3 ± 10.9 years of age) or the usual care group (n = 139, 56.0 ± 11.0). After 6 months from randomization, adjusted means for health-related quality of life were higher in the CM group (FACT-B score 107.9; 95 % CI 104.1-111.7) compared to the usual care group (102.2; 98.5-105.9) with an adjusted FACT-B score difference between groups of 5.7 (2.6-8.7, p < 0.001). Thus, an additional individualized and complex complementary medicine intervention improved quality of life of breast cancer patients compared to usual care alone. Further studies evaluating specific effects of treatment components should follow to optimize the treatment of breast cancer patients

    BackgroundThe recognition of serious pathologies affecting the musculoskeletal (MSK) system, especially in the early stage of a disease, is an important but challenging task. The prevalence of such serious pathologies is currently low. However, in our progressing aging population, it is anticipated that serious pathologies affecting the MSK system will be on the rise. Physiotherapists, as part of a wider health care team, can play a valuable role in the recognition of serious pathologies. It is at present unknown how accurately Austrian qualified physiotherapists can detect the presence of serious pathologies affecting the MSK system and therefore determine whether physiotherapy management is indicated (keep patients) or not (refer patients to a medical doctor). ObjectiveWe will explore the current ability of Austrian qualified physiotherapists to recognize serious pathologies by using validated clinical vignettes. MethodsAs part of an electronic web-based survey, these vignettes will be distributed among a convenience sample of qualified Austrian physiotherapists working in a hospital or private setting. The survey will consist of four sections: (1) demographics and general information, (2) the clinical vignettes, (3) questions concerning the clinical vignettes, and (4) self-perceived knowledge gaps and learning preferences from the perspective of study participants. Results will further be used for (1) international comparison with similar studies from the existing literature and (2) gaining insight into the participants’ self-perceived knowledge gaps and learning preferences for increasing their knowledge level about keep-refer decision-making and detecting serious pathologies. ResultsData collection took place between May 2022 and June 2022. As of June 2022, a total of 479 Austrian physiotherapists completed the survey. Data analysis has started, and we aim to publish the results in 2023. ConclusionsThe results of this survey will provide insights into the ability of Austrian physiotherapists to make accurate keep-refer decisions and to recognize the presence of serious pathologies using clinical vignettes.     Single‐Molecule Doping : Conductance Changed By Transition Metal Centers in Salen Molecules

    The creation of molecular components for use as electronic devices has made enormous progress. In order to advance the field further toward realistic electronic concepts, methods for the controlled modification of the conducting properties of the molecules contacted by metallic electrodes need to be further developed. Here a comprehensive study of charge transport in a class of molecules that allows modifications by introducing metal centers into organic structures is presented. Single molecules are electrically contacted and characterized in order to understand the role of the metal centers in the conductance mechanism through the molecular junctions. It is shown that the presence of single metal ions modifies the energy levels and the coupling of the molecules to the electrical contacts, and that these modifications lead to systematic variations in the statistical behavior of transport properties of the molecular junctions. A rigorous statistical analysis of thousands of junctions is performed to reveal this correlation. The understanding of the role of the metal ion in the resulting conductance properties is an essential step toward the development of molecular electronic circuits.publishe
